Виртуальная машина Java (Java virtual machine, JVM) представляет собой виртуальную машину, предназначенную для исполнения Java байт-кода, т.е. это компонент выполнения кода Java платформы. Sun Microsystems утверждает, что в мире около пяти с половиной миллиардов устройств, имеющих в своём составе виртуальную машину Java.
Виртуальная машина Java – это программа, выполняющая некие другие программы, а именно содержащие инструкции в виде Java байт-кода. Чаще всего JVM реализуется на базе существующей операционной системы, но также она может быть реализована и чисто на аппаратном уровне. JVM предоставляет среду выполнения для Java байт-кода и позволяет использовать такие возможности, как автоматическая обработка исключений, что в свою очередь позволяет в ходе отладки легко выявлять причину каждой ошибки (exception). JVM распространяется вместе с библиотекой классов JAVA, набором стандартных библиотек классов (в байт-коде Java), которые реализуют интерфейс программирования приложений Java. Эти библиотеки в совокупности с виртуальной машиной Java составляют Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
JVM доступны для множества аппаратных и программных платформ. Использование одного байт-кода для всех JVM на всех платформах позволяет сказать о языке Java: «написано единожды, запускается повсеместно», в то время как к кроссплатформенным языкам применимо выражение «написано единожды, компилируется повсеместно». Таким образом, JVM является важнейшим компонентом платформы Java.
Байт-код Java является промежуточным языком, который чаще всего скомпилирован из Java, но также может быть получен и из других языков программирования.
Корпорация Oracle, владелец торговой марки Java, производит наиболее широко используемые виртуальные машины Java, именуемы HotSpot, которые написаны на языке C++. Другие компании также могут разрабатывать виртуальный Java машины, используя торговую марку Java, при условии, что они будут придерживать спецификаций JVM, опубликованных Oracle Corporation и сопутствующих договорных обязательств.
